5) TANGTSUNGCHIEN with Tung-Hua shadow puppet theater.

The designer’s eponymous creative studio, TANGTSUNGCHIEN, focuses on tailoring and reconstruction. Bold prints and intricate details characterise his design. Tang favours asymmetry and showcases his mastery in mixing and matching colours, textures, and patterns. His work embodies surrealism and nostalgia. In 2019, his first collection, “Sleepwalker,” was one of the best ten fashion design finalists at the 34th Festival d’Hyères.

TAIPEI FASHION WEEK 2023 at Nankunshen Daitian Temple in Tainan, Dyelog PR London, April 8th

Traditional shadow puppetry is a part of people’s lives and reflects Taiwan’s customs, religions, solar terms, and rituals. In Taiwan, we perform Shadow puppet shows at temples to thank the gods and entertain the people. As a result, Tung-Hua Shadow Puppet Theater is a heritage group registered with the Kaohsiung City Government. It is the oldest shadow puppet troupe in Taiwan. The troupe’s director, Chang Fu-Kuo, commits herself to continuing the traditional craft of puppetry. For Chang, the most important is to innovate the plot, puppets, and set design. In addition, the puppetry demonstrates artistry in both performance and craft.

6) YENLINE with paper sculptor I-Chang Chen.

Designer Hsu Yen-line’s eponymous brand “YENLINE” specialises in three-dimensional cuts that aim to achieve the most natural and comfortable fit. However, Hsu presents an alternative fashion aesthetic through adventurous cross-industry experiments. The designer is interested in Taiwan’s aboriginal culture and local crafts. Above all, her work resonates with the land and its people. Hsu defends through her innovative design the forgotten traditional craft techniques of Taiwan.

Paper sculpture originated as folk art and is popular in celebrations, rituals, and ornaments. In contemporary life, there are increasingly more diverse applications and artistic creations of paper sculptures. However, Paper sculptor Chen I-Chang is a three-time recipient of the “Tainan Award” from the Tainan Fine Arts Exhibition. Chen’s delicate hand-carved sculpture technique reflects the philosophy of focusing on the details. Techniques such as cutting, slicing, tearing, folding, glueing, and pasting are part of his works with ritualistic symbolism.

7) WEI TZU-YUAN with Hsia-Sheng Chen.

WEI.TZU-YUAN studied clothing design from high school to master’s class. However, he is enthusiastic about artistic creation and experimentation. The design scope includes advertising music videos, ceremonies, and theatre arts.

CHEN Hsia-Sheng uses techniques such as knotting, dyeing, and knitting to create a variety of knots. The knots embody traditional mythologies and religious blessings (peace, happiness, bliss, etc.). However, they also serve as a bridge between the material and spiritual worlds. The Taipei City Government has nominated the Knot-weaving master Chen Hsia-Sheng as an Intangible Cultural Heritage Preservationist of the Art of Traditional Knot Weaving. In addition, she is an expert on the historical development of knots and their representations. Her works are traditional and innovative. Chen is a towering figure in traditional decorative knot weaving in Taiwan.
