Behind the Scenes at London Fashion Week 2021: A Personal Journey.
In September 2021, I was fortunate enough to experience the magic of Paul Costelloe’s captivating presentation at London Fashion Week, a celebrated event held from September 17 to 21. This occasion was especially significant as it represented a long-awaited return to the vibrant energy of in-person shows after the pandemic.
The memory of meeting Paul Costelloe still brings a smile to my face. He greeted us with genuine warmth, inviting us into a tastefully designed space that buzzed with creative energy. Carefully arranged mood boards and colourful sketches adorned the room, revealing the inspiration behind his latest collection.
Engaging in a spirited dialogue with Paul was a highlight of my experience. However, he spoke passionately about his vision. Detailing the intricate techniques used to create the stunning textiles and the stories each piece aimed to tell. As the presentation unfolded, models emerged, gracefully showcasing the elegant creations that flowed around them.
Each garment was a masterpiece, featuring vibrant hues, elaborate patterns, and intricate detailing. For his spring/summer 2022 collection, Paul Costelloe drew inspiration from ancient Celtic Art and the Illuminated Manuscript of the Book of Kells. In short, custom linen fabrics became a powerful homage to Celtic rich cultural heritage.

The intricate Celtic designs harmoniously enhanced Paul’s selection of natural fabrics, which captivated me. His collection showcased exquisite printed and woven linens sourced from William Clark, Ireland’s oldest linen mill, renowned for its rich heritage and craftsmanship. Alongside these, the artistry of Emblem Weavers in Wexford added a unique touch, while the luxurious cotton blends imported from Italy brought an elevated sense of elegance. The rich shades of blue in these creations radiated brilliance, creating a perfect balance between tradition and modernity.
As a designer, Paul poured his heart and soul into every aspect of his work, meticulously crafting each piece by hand. From the carefully drawn initial sketches to the thoughtfully chosen fabrics and patterns, his artistic vision was evident in every detail. The masterpieces he created were not merely garments; they were an homage to the timeless artistry reminiscent of the hand-produced Book of Kells, rich with historical significance and intricate detail.
During that unforgettable day with Paul, he opened up about his personal ideas, dreams, and the vivid images that inspired him. His willingness to share his creative journey forged a deep connection between us, reminding all who were present that the exploration of creativity knows no bounds.
